Skagway, White Pass Railway – Alaska

Going on the White Pass Railway is probably one of the most popular tours in Skagway. This 3-hour tour starts at the harbour, and takes you all the way to White Pass Summit at 2888ft! The White Pass Railway was built as a means to get to the goldfields in Alaska. And while they tell you many interesting facts along the way, it also gives a chance for Alaska to show off a little of its absolute magnificence 🙂

The tour is well organized, and the Railway takes the same track up and down. Very informative commentary is given along the ride, so that you know what you are looking at and also what to look out for. At the summit, everyone switches sides in the train, and that way you get to see all the sites through the massive windows. You can also stand outside between trucks, but remember with the elevation it can get very cold outside!

The valley, in which the White Pass Railway was built, was actually carved out by a glacier which has now retreated all the way to the top of the mountains. The sites are endlessly beautiful with green fields, snow-capped mountains, wild flowers and rivers. The train only runs in the summer months.
